If you have kids you've heard it. If you were a kid you've said it. "Don't touch me!" is the gold standard for unofficial tattling in the sibling kingdom.
Nowadays I can walk into a bathroom at a store without opening a door, the toilet flushes itself, the water at the sink automatically comes on, the soap falls in my hand, and air dries me off. And I didn't push any buttons. Or levers. We are being programmed not to touch things for health's sake. And it's working (they even make a special garden hose now to drink out of, geez).
But is this not also programming us to keep our distance from others? When is the last time you gave a hug? Or shook someone's hand? Hopefully not that long ago!
Let me take a moment for a disclaimer: use common sense. Don't be creepy or weird. Hugs should be given with consent only. Okay, that should cover that.
As believers we should be warm and welcoming. Smile when we greet. Handshakes, SIDE hugs with the opposite sex. Fist bumps. High fives (if that's still cool). That awkward hand-grab-to-pull-in-back slap that guys do. Anything appropriate that welcomes a person into your space.
So be kind to one another. Let people know you care about them. That you are glad to see them. Love them to Christ! Or love them as they grow closer to Christ. Greet one another with a holy hug!
